St Andrew's Church • East Lulworth

St Andrew's Church, from the roof of Lulworth Castle.

The late 15th century tower of the church pre-dates the castle. However, the rest of it is a 19th-century rebuild dating to 1864.

The belfry houses three bells, the earliest of which dated to 1589. There is room for a fourth bell, and legend says this lay on the sea bed at Arish Mel, a bay about a mile away. The boat carrying the bell was sunk, and the bell never recovered.

The bay itself is largely inaccessible and flanked by the Lulworth firing ranges, which can be seen rising above the church in the picture above.
