John's Pond • Dorchester

John’s Pond, Dorchester.

It is said that the pond is named after an escaped prisoner from the nearby prison. Legend has it that the prisoner escaped the gaol, only to fall into the pond and drown, presumably weighed down by his shackles. The area is now said to be haunted by the man, and the sound of his chains can be heard on still nights. The water meadow near this spot was also the site of Dorchester’s last public hangings in the 1800s .

Dorchester is a town in the county of Dorset and has a rich history. It’s well worth a visit for those interested in ghosts, or indeed crime and punishment in centuries past.

I'll be adding many more Dorchester posts, so keep an eye!
