It’s possible that there has been a water powered mill here since Saxon times.
The building consists of two wings, north and south. The south wing is a 17th century rebuild of an earlier building.
The north wing, once a completely separate fulling** mill, is an 18th century rebuild. The fulling mill was in use around 1611, but the whole site was subsequently used for milling grain for flour.
Historically the mill was powered by a pair of undershot water wheels. These were replaced with a single water turbine in 1904.
This is still a working mill and is open to the public during Summer.
**Fulling was a practice in the cloth making industry which allowed natural fibres such as wool to be refined and made more suitable for clothing.
