Village Sign • Langton Matravers

Village signs can be a great insight into the histories, traditions, or significant events in a village.

In Langton Matravers there is a great example.

The overall design is based around a cross shape, which represents St George, to whom the Parish church is dedicated.

The top carving depicts a chisel and mallet, which represents local trade and how industry was dependent on the quarrying and carving of local Purbeck stone.

In the centre is shown the Arms of the De Mautravers family, who gave their name to a couple of villages in the parish.

Either side of the Coat of Arms are flaming torches, representing learning and progress associated with the local school and village societies.

At the bottom is shown a cows head, reminding us that Langton Matravers, like many rural Dorset villages, was reliant on livestock farming.

The sign was carved in 1951 by Alan Marsh, based on a design by R J Saville.
